O2ctopus® Diffused Air System

O2ctopus® is a floating, surface-maintainable aeration system. The system offers all the advantages of fine or coarse bubble diffusion and is constructed from high-strength stainless steel. Each O2ctopus® system is specially designed for easy maintenance, heat retention in cold months, and reduced electrical consumption.

The units do not require any electrical connections to be made in or over the water — they are fed air via robust hose and stainless fittings by an on-shore blower. Once the air is delivered to each unit, the custom manufactured legs are designed to reach the lowest point in the aeration vessel and maximise bubble contact and subsequent oxygen transfer efficiency. Tubular diffusers are used on the bottom of each leg to disperse the air into microfine bubbles that allow dissolved oxygen to be readily consumed in the aerobic treatment process.

Each O2ctopus is secured with stainless cable and clamps to keep it in place, whilst allowing easy disconnection if servicing is required. The system’s diffusers are easily maintained. Simply use the quick connect cam-lock fitting to disconnect the air supply and plug the hose. The whole O2ctopus unit can be lifted from the treatment vessel for service without affecting operation of remaining units.

Series 3 Windpowered Aeration/Mix Units
Series 3 Logo

The Series 3 is a unique windpowered aerator/mixer unit used primarily for wastewater treatment. The Series 3 offers another means of reaerating water impoundments with very little associated energy cost and little maintenance or wear and tear. The Series 3 significantly increases typical dissolved oxygen levels in water in specific applications, but doesn’t use conventional aeration techniques (neither surface splashing nor diffused air). The deep-mix capability and large area of coverage provides a zero-to-low energy method to treat wastewater quality problems summer and winter.

The Series 3 “optimises” the overall biological conditions in facultative lagoon-based systems, including increasing typical DO levels, thereby boosting performance and solving numerous operational problems such as odor, short-circuiting, overloaded conditions, sludge buildups, etc. all with zero-to-low energy costs and virtually no maintenance. (See Accel-o-Fac™ and Aero-Fac® brochures for complete details.) Series 3s can often replace conventional expensive aerators or diffusers, as well as downsizing cells or allowing higher organic loadings than non-aerated cells — all without significant operating costs.

Years of proven results in a variety of climates and applications worldwide assure performance. The efficient design requires a minimum wind speed of only about 4-5 mph (6.4 kph) 65–75% of the time to solve water problems, but can withstand strong winds. An optional electric backup Motor Kit is available activated by wind speed. Cost savings in electricity alone can often pay for entire installations within 2–3 years.

Recommended applications:

1) Deep DO, destratification and mix needed; 2) Energy savings and/or the cost of installing power is key; 3) Supplemental aeration and deep mix in conjunction with existing aerators; 4) Remote locations where minimal maintenance and attention is important; 5) Facultative wastewater ponds to solve numerous problems; 6) Deep-mix applications where ordinary surface aerators can’t reach the lower, oxygen-depleted water.

Accel-o-Fac® Wastewater Treatment System

Accel-o-Fac® is a long-term sustainable “All-in-One” wastewater treatment system. Based on the tried and proven facultative biological process, Accel-o-Fac® (accelerated facultative™) has successfully treated a wide variety of wastewater for many years. Accel-o-Fac® provides Water Companies with extremely robust, odour free wastewater treatment that requires little in the way of operator attention or maintenance and, best of all, no sludge handling or removal — truly “All-in-One” total treatment on site.

These benefits are accomplished with almost zero operating cost by employing wind power as the primary energy source and through the use of highly specialised equipment combined with a number of unique design, construction and operation techniques. The net result is a total “optimisation” of a purely biological process resulting in an overall acceleration of the processing rate. This “optimisation” enables Accel-o-Fac® wastewater treatment plants to be smaller than old-fashioned WSP designs — all at zero-to-low operating cost and without the use of expensive and complex conventional mechanical aeration, chemicals or significant manpower.

Enhancing the Facultative Biological Process

Accel-o-Fac® not only boosts natural oxygen transfer, but also provides an ideal quiescent zone for solids settling and self-digestion of the sludge — a fundamental and essential part of the “All-in-One” facultative biological total treatment process.

The Accel-o-Fac® system also eliminates the problems of short circuiting by radially dispersing and distributing the incoming organic load throughout the entire treatment volume. With Accel-o-Fac®, the entire cell volume and surface area are put to work with no dead spots and no “hot” or overloaded spots (such as near the influent area). This alone dramatically increases the processing capacity of the cells enabling it to automatically deal with shock loads.

Accel-o-Fac® can accommodate huge variations in flows without any operating problems. Storm water flows, peak flows, seasonal increases are all effortlessly handled.

Self Digesting Sludge

Long term studies prove these systems anaerobically self-digest all organics within the system with the inert materials accommodated for the life of the plant. That can be an important consideration with regulations and concerns regarding sludge disposal and handling. Accel-o-Fac® acheives this important benefit by ensuring correct loadings and detention times as part of the overall design process along with optimised conditions within the system.

O & M Considerations

Equipment maintenance for a typical Accel-o-Fac® system for a small community is minimal, requiring less than 10 man hours of mostly visual inspections annually. Lubrication of bearings occurs automatically via the special lubrication system, serviceable on an approximately semi-annual basis, and there are almost no consumable parts to replace over the years.

Cost Effective?

With the significant reductions in total operating costs as compared to conventional package or mechanical plants, the Accel-o-Fac® system is typically fully self-liquidating, meaning that the entire construction cost of the wastewater treatment plant can be paid for with just the reductions in operating costs alone as compared to other common alternatives. Long-Term Sustainable “All-in-One” No-Sludge Wastewater Treatment for Small Communities from Gurney Environmental.

Aero-Fac® Wastewater Treatment System

Aero-Fac® is a high-process-rate, small footprint wastewater treatment system that has been well proven with a variety of municipal and industrial wastewater applications in all types of climates. Aero-Fac® employs an advanced and optimised form of a completely biological aerated facultative treatment process that automatically adjusts to handle extreme variations in flows and loadings. Aero-Fac® incorporates fast and easy construction techniques, uses little energy, requires exceptionally simplified operator skills, almost no maintenance, and yet turns out effluent quality that can be superior for reuse and irrigation.

A No-Sludge Wastewater Treatment System

Aero-Fac® offers a number of unique benefits, not the least of which is a self-digesting sludge process that requires no pre-screening, sedimentation tanks, clarifiers, sludge removal, dewatering, chemicals or conditioning. And best of all, Aero-Fac® requires no routine sludge disposal or the associated tanker traffic in and out of the treatment plant. Sludge is continuously self-digested within the initial treatment stage eliminating costly equipment, labor and regulation.

Extremely Low CAPEX and OPEX

Another advantage of Aero-Fac® is the very low operating cost. The systemis unique in its use of a fully biological process along with wind powered aerators matched with an innovative diffused air aeration system. Overall the system can operate at anywhere from 50-85% less than typical activated sludge systems.

The wind powered aeration units used in the Aero-Fac® system have been extensively proven in wastewater treatment and other water applications. The completely stainless steel diffused air aeration components are also unique in that they require no routine cleaning or maintenance and are backed by an industry-unique 20-year limited parts warranty resulting in an extremely low total life-cycle cost.

No Odour

Water industry personnel are routinely amazed by the lack of odour at Aero-Fac® facilities. Many remark that it is hard to believe that they are actually at a sewage treatment plant!

Extraordinary Flow/Load Flexibility

Seldom does a wastewater treatment plant see exactly the same flows or loadings throughout its lifetime or even during various parts of a week or year. Whether from tourism, storm water infiltration/flows, industry, growth or other issues, flows and loads vary at many facilities. This is where Aero-Fac® really shines.

Aero-Fac® can be designed to automatically accommodate anywhere from zero flows up to almost unlimited flows — all unattended. Shock or spike loads have little effect under most any circumstances. This makes Aero-Fac® ideal for tourism areas, developments with planned growth, areas with large storm water fluctuations or industrial users.

WEARS® Reservoir Mixing Equipment

The water in reservoirs and deep lakes naturally forms thermal layers. The result can be mineral rich layers, blooms of blue green algae and aged water. As a result, the water has to be subjected to expensive chemical treatment before it is safe to drink.

The traditional fix is to bubble compressed air into the base of the reservoir to break up the layers. This is expensive to install and operate, however, and it is not a realistic option for many water authorities.

The ResMix system is a floating axial flow impeller system that skims large volumes of water from the surface and pushes it down to break up the layers. The system is very cost effective, simple to install and uses about one twentieth of the power of conventional solutions. Water quality starts to improve in days, and, to date, there have been no more blue green algal blooms in reservoirs using the system. The ResMix system can also be powered by photovoltaic panels for use in remote areas where mains power would be too costly to install.

BioBloc® Fixed Media Ammonia-Nitrogen Removal System

Bio2Bloc was developed for aerobic wastewater retention tanks, basins or lagoons that can benefit from fixed-film treatment. The Bio2Bloc system has been in service since 1999 in municipal and industrial WWTPs. The system has performed successfully in removing BOD and ammonia where alternatives would have been too expensive or would have taken too long to implement.

Bio2Bloc provides a rich and stable environment to bolster existing microorganisms. However, unlike an RBC, the aerated media beds are in constant contact with the wastewater and are completely aerated by a highly efficient aeration system. Each Bio2Bloc module is filled with thousands of pieces of bio-media where, during normal operation, a healthy biomass is formed by a supply of wastewater and air produced by the fine bubble membrane diffusers located on the bottom of each bio-chamber.

As with any fixed-film biological contactor, the units will tend to become overgrown with organisms after a period of time. When this happens the patented Bio2Bloc has a separate coarse-bubble system, valved from the shore, to slough the media bed and clear the chamber for renewed growth.

Each Bio2Bloc module is designed to be deployed individually or in series to remove varying pollutant loads. They diffuse a high level of dissolved oxygen into surrounding wastewater through the media bed. The system is designed to individual application specifications and is easily installed using a light-duty HIAB truck or small crane and floated into position.

Low-Temperature Nitrification

Bio2Blocs have been successfully used to maintain nitrification in cold northern climates by creating the stable, oxygen-rich, and immobilised microenvironment favoured by the nitrifying bacteria.

The Bio2Bloc system can be sized to eliminate as much ammonia as required to meet effluent requirements. Successful performance of Bio2Bloc systems have been achieved through complete winter seasons at WWTPs in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania in the United States.

In many cases, simple upgrades can be paid for quickly in ongoing operating cost savings.

Use Our Experience

At GURNEY ENVIRONMENTAL, you can use our experience to solve problems in water and wastewater treatment. Let us show you proven methods that can reduce costs and improve treatment.

What does it cost to treat a gallon or cubic meter of water? Whether it is sewage, industrial wastewater, freshwater or potable, someone has to pay for each gallon for the life of the facility.

Included in that per gallon cost are capital costs (including construction, procurement, equipment, etc.) and ongoing operating expenses. This includes any supplies required, energy, spares and replacements, plus manpower.

GURNEY ENVIRONMENTAL offers what it considers the lowest total life cost treatment options on the market today. Our emphasis is reduction of all costs, but particularly the ongoing operating costs. With overeducating costs of operation, the Total Life Cost approach can save enough over the life of a facility to completely pay for the upgrade or initial construction.

OUR FOCUS

At GURNEY ENVIRONMENTAL, we believe in highly sustainable solutions that dramatically reduce ongoing operating costs over the life of the system.

Reductions in energy, maintenance, operator skills, lorry movements and replacements are all part of creating a more sustainable approach to water treatment with a low carbon footprint.
