GURNEY ENVIRONMENTAL, the West Norfolk-based sustainable wastewater treatment solutions provider, have received an order from the Nelson City Council in New Zealand to supply Gurney’s exclusive Accel-o-Fac® wastewater treatment system upgrade for the city’s wastewater treatment plant.

The first phase of the order includes the supply of wind-powered SERIES 3 aerator/mixers to replace the existing electric aerator/aspirators, which are costly to run and maintain (OPEX). The order is due to be shipped to New Zealand in late January ready for installation in March/April.

Following a lengthy consultation process with Gurney Environmental, Nelson City Council chose the Accel-o-Fac system for its well-proven and time-tested sustainability credentials and its ability to improve the wastewater treatment process in facultative lagoons. The City Council also appreciated Accel-o-Fac’s ability to extend the life of the existing wwtp asset. The order also followed the successful demonstration of the Accel-o-Fac system with nearby Australian water utilities including the Toora wwtp owned and operated by South Gippsland Water. At that Australian facility, the Accel-o-Fac upgrade improved wastewater processing and significantly reduced energy costs (OPEX).

The Accel-o-Fac system is advanced technology that can be used to upgrade existing lagoon-based systems, providing accelerated processing rates, increased DO levels, elimination of short circuiting, accelerated disinfection, odour elimination and accelerated total sludge digestion — all of which allows greater loads to be applied to existing lagoons, thereby extending their life whilst improving performance.

Gurney Environmental continue to enjoy success with their export programme of manufacturing and supplying extraordinarily sustainable wastewater treatment solutions to a growing number of wastewater treatment plant operators around the globe. The company's highly innovative and sustainable wastewater treatment solutions are time-proven to have provided operators with significant energy savings and improved processing power over several decades. The company continues to expand its export programme and is currently working on a number of projects in a variety of countries around the world.

We've already found that the ponds work a lot better, they are a lot cleaner and functionally look a lot better than what they were previously. It seems to be working at this stage, so we're quietly confident that it's going to be a good investment.

...there is no doubt about it, the ResMix system works! Having started with a volatile and inconsistent chlorine residuals in our supply, we are now using the WEARS product to mix and dose our tanks. We are not alone in our experiences here. All I can say is that the results speak for themselves.

Doug Moorby Manager of Engineering Operations Norromine Shire, Australia

Adding the Accel-o-Fac® system to South Gippsland Water treatment cells where traditional surface aeration was previously used allowed the corporation to significantly reduce energy use. The savings in kWh are excellent with one application saving 72% in energy compared to the previous year.

The fact that there is no associated sewage odours [with the Accel-o-Fac wwtp] meant that the system could be located relatively near to the village, and, after 10 years of use, no sludge removal has been needed.

These results show that the [ResMix] mixer is providing a fully mixed water column and preventing conditions for manganese and nutrient release from the sediments.

We are very pleased to be using this innovative management system in the reservoir at Pontsticill. This investment will improve the water quality for customers in the area and ensure they continue to receive a top quality supply of drinking water long into the future.

The Aero-Fac system at Windsor has to date met and exceeded our consent discharge levels, and we have been very happy with the system installed.
