Gurney Environmental have completed the installation of an Accel-o-Fac® wastewater treatment upgrade to the Harbour View WWTW located just outside Kingston Town. The wwtp is owned and operated by the National Water Commission (NWC).

The installation of the system follows the signing of an MOU between the NWC and Gurney Environmental in March of this year. The installation will demonstrate how the company’s Accel-o-Fac system can be used in this case to upgrade existing lagoon-based systems operated by the NWC, as well as maintain highly sustainable, affordable sanitation for the people of Jamaica. Low energy and no sludge or odours are primary benefits.

news jamaica accel installv2The Accel-o-Fac system uses wind power as its primary energy source, of which Jamaica has a plentiful supply! Eliminating the reliance on electricity — which can be intermittent in some parts of the country and cost as much as 40 cents/KWH — is critical for sustainable wastewater treatment. Put simply, energy intensive systems are impractical for reliable sanitation.

The Accel-o-Fac system can be used to upgrade existing lagoon-based systems providing accelerated processing rates, increased DO levels, uniform loading of the cells (no influent zone hotspots), elimination of short circuiting (increasing true detention time), accelerated disinfection, complete odour control and accelerated sludge digestion — all of which allows greater loads to be applied to existing lagoons, thereby extending their life whilst improving performance.

As well as projects involving the upgrading of existing infrastructure, Gurney Environmental are also working with local consultants on the Island to show how the Company’s Aero-Fac® system can be used as an alternative to activated sludge for new-build plants in peri-urban areas. Aero-Fac can provide activated sludge quality effluent, but without the high CAPEX and continuous ongoing OPEX costs associated with activated sludge. Aero-Fac also has a fraction of the maintenance requirements, making the system an ideal alternative to activated sludge where the total cost of wastewater treatment is an issue.

When an existing primary cell is first converted to an Accel-o-Fac system, the windpowered SERIES 3 aerator/optimisers re-suspend the light sluff layer covering the sludge blanket. The aerobic action quickly digests this material and begins to clarify the entire upper water column creating an oxygen rich environment ideal for accelerated BOD removal and aerobic biochemical stripping of noxious gases.
