Following the successful use of Accel-o-Fac® wastewater treatment upgrades at both the Harbour View and Greater Portmore WwTP's (owned and operated by the Jamaican National Water Commission), Gurney Environmental has won a follow-on order to design, supply and install a new 5,500 population equivalent (pe) Aero-Fac® primary treatment cell plus an upgrade of the existing WwTP at the Sea Crest housing development on Jamaica’s North coast.
The NWC had earlier commissioned an engineering study to review the existing status of various treatment plants as well to develop a proposal to rehabilitate and upgrade facilities. These studies were mainly in preparation for the plants to receive additional flows from new sub-divisions as well as meeting and adhering to all environmental standards.
New Build Plus Retrofit
During the construction and upgrade, the contractor will be building a new Aero-Fac® Primary Treatment cell featuring no-sludge technology. The existing primary and secondary ponds will be converted to parallel secondary cells with SERIES 3 wind powered aeration and optimisation. An additional two small cells will be converted to constructed wetlands. In the sat map below, the general arrangement is shown.
The revised layout arrangement (see below) will reduce the surface loading in the primary stage and provide extremely low energy and maintenance aeration with the Aero-Fac® System’s ability to handle higher loading rates as compared to standard WSP’s. The Aero-Fac® primary stage uses both SERIES 3 wind powered aeration plus virtually zero-maintenance, all-stainless diffused air.
- The all-stainless diffused air system is designed to normally be in the off-state, activated automatically by a dissolved oxygen monitor only when required by increased demand.
- The diffusers are self-cleaning and require virtually no routine maintenance. The low-pressure fan blowers have a very low wear factor with minor ongoing routine maintenance.
- The Aero-Fac® WwTP is also equipped with wind-powered SERIES 3 aerator/mixers that provide constant aeration and balanced loading throughout the treatment cells with zero-to-low energy costs. These units provide the supplemental oxygen and overall cell optimisation for early-years or off-peak low-flow/load situations.
- When oxygen demand exceeds their capability, the powerful diffused air system automatically kicks in to handle larger flows/loads when and if needed.
Detailed Study by the National Water Commission (NWC)
The Sea Crest Aero-Fac® wastewater treatment expansion and upgrade option was chosen by the NWC based on the system's well proven and time-tested sustainability credentials, plus its ability to improve the wastewater treatment process in primary facultative, secondary and polishing lagoons. The system enables operators to extend the life and increase treatment capacity of their existing wastewater treatment assets.
The Aero-Fac® system is an advanced technology that can be used as a new-build design or to upgrade existing systems, providing substantially accelerated processing rates, increased DO levels, elimination of short circuiting, accelerated disinfection, odour elimination and accelerated total sludge digestion — all of which allows greater loads to be applied to existing lagoons, thereby extending their life whilst improving performance.
The installation of the Sea Crest Aero-Fac® wastewater treatment upgrade will increase the load and flow capacity of wastewater treatment infrastructure in the Discovery Bay area and has been chosen by the National Water Commission as their preferred solution.
Several Unique Wastewater Treatment Solutions from Gurney Environmental
Gurney Environmental offer several systems and variations of the Aero-Fac® system that include:
The very unique and economical Accel-o-Fac® system, as an example, offers a zero-to-low energy solution that provides incredibly low OPEX with very low initial CAPEX. In many cases, no energy costs plus no sludge handling costs or complexities make Accel-o-Fac® extraordinarily sustainable and economical initially and long-term. Accel-o-Fac® has been used for over a decade in the UK at such locations as Holkham Hall and Village.
