Measures to reduce harm from wastewater storm overflows to be made law in the UK with new legal duties on water companies and government designed to reduce sewage discharged into waterways.

Measures to reduce sewage discharges from storm overflows will be put into law the government confirmed in March as part of an ambitious agenda to build back greener from the pandemic.

During wet weather, storm overflows act to prevent sewers becoming overloaded with a combination of sewage and rain and release diluted wastewater into rivers. However, according to the published report by the UK government, their use has increased in recent years as climate change has led to greater rainfall and water infrastructure has not kept pace with population growth.

Reducing the reliance of water companies on storm overflows is important to help cut pollution in waterways, and earlier this year the Government announced it was working to tackle high levels of sewage in our rivers, following the introduction of a Private Member’s Bill in 2020.

This ambition has now been turned into action, with the government confirming that a number of key policies will be made law.

Gurney Environmental Offer Several Time-Tested, Low Cost Options, With WwTPs in Operation for Over Two Decades.

Seldom does a wastewater treatment plant see exactly the same flows or loadings throughout its lifetime or even during various parts of a week or year. Whether from tourism, storm water infiltration/flows, industry, growth or other issues, flows and loads vary at many facilities. This is where Gurney Environmental’s unique Aero-Fac® and Accel-o-Fac® wastewater treatment systems really shine. Aero-Fac® and Accel-o-Fac® can be designed to automatically accommodate anywhere from zero flows up to almost unlimited flows — all unattended. Storm, shock or spike loads have little effect under most any circumstances. This makes Aero-Fac® and Accel-o-Fac® ideal for tourism areas, developments with planned growth, areas with large storm water fluctuations or industrial users.

Extraordinary Flow Variation Capability

Process engineers at Gurney Environmental have designed and developed both Aero-Fac® and Accel-o-Fac® systems in the UK that have been operational for up to 20+ years that due to the unique design of these systems have never had untreated wastewater storm overflows.

Errol Scotland – 20 Years, Zero Overflow

The Errol Aero-Fac® wastewater system was designed for the client (at the time North of Scotland Water) to meet a target growth population of 2,000, but possibly rising due to other growth possibilities as well as peak storm flow and loading situations over the life of the facility, both long-term and short-term variations. Aero-Fac® is unique in its ability to handle not only long-term growth, but also storm and seasonal peaks due to tourism and other events.

In the analysis by North of Scotland Water’s consultants, Aero-Fac® offered a proven and tested system with the flexibility and robustness of operation to be able to cost-effectively and easily accommodate both potential growth as well as any potential flow variation. And over the past 20 years, it has truly proven its capabilities.

Several Unique Wastewater Treatment Solutions from Gurney Environmental

Gurney Environmental offer several systems and variations of the Aero-Fac® system that include:

    1. Full treatment, standalone solutions (Aero-Fac® and Accel-o-Fac®);
    2. Pretreatment systems to solve issues and expand existing filter plants (Aero-Fac® PTS); and
    3. Standalone sludge digestion systems (Aero-Fac® SDS).

The very unique and economical Accel-o-Fac® system, as an example, offers a zero-to-low energy solution that provides incredibly low OPEX with very low initial CAPEX. In many cases, no energy costs plus no sludge handling costs or complexities make Accel-o-Fac® extraordinarily sustainable and economical initially and long-term. Accel-o-Fac® has been used for over a decade in the UK at such locations as Holkham Hall and Village.
