In 2019 South West Water joined other water companies by employing new options to improve water quality whilst reducing both CAPEX and OPEX. The newest order was the 2nd for South West Water.
Recently the Institute of Water’s South West Area Innovation Award Competition judges singled out the use of the ResMix ‘Source Management’ Systems at South West Water. The independent judges, drawn from Academic, Water Company and Supply Chain commented: “Interesting to see the combination of two proven technologies that are now of a suitably industrial scale to use in a drinking water reservoir to overcome issues around stratification and turnover of the water column and removing algae.”
In 2019 South West Water installed their first ResMix ‘Source Management System’ at Wistlandpound reservoir (pictured above and below right). Within 90 days of installation, South West Water reported improvements to the Wistlandpound reservoir including a reduction in algae.
In March of 2023, Gurney Environmental completed the installation for South West Water of a 2nd ResMix 3000 ‘Source Management’ System at their Meldon Reservoir, this unit with the optional TYTAN® Algae Management System. The ResMix 3000 unit at Wistlandpound replaced a previous compressed air system for BGA control. The newest installation at Meldon was the 2nd ResMix system installed for SWW. The new ResMix 3000 units are able to reduce energy requirements by almost 90%!
Chris Rockey, head of water quality for SWW, with original ResMix being towed into position behind him. Rockey said: “The ResMix is an innovative replacement of the system used previously and will provide better mixing more efficiently while using less energy due to its ingenious design.”

Raw Water Pretreatment
Cost effective, simple to install and with very low energy consumption (<10% of a compressed air system), ResMix provides sustainable, year-round ‘Source Management’ for the first time. The optional TYTAN® Algae Management System attaches directly to the ResMix unit to provide an increased pro-active positive algae management that treats the water as it is constantly drawn into the area surrounding the ResMix unit with a 500m area of influence.
The largest system, the ResMix 5000cc, consists of two counter rotating, surface-mounted, large axial flow mixers. The units can transfer 20 tonnes of oxygenated water from the surface to the bottom of a reservoir every second, not only eliminating thermal stratification but also increasing net dissolved oxygen levels throughout the water column. The ResMix 3000 is a smaller version of the 5000cc.

Meldon Reservoir is a reservoir in Devon, England owned by South West Water. Over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, several reservoirs and dams were built in the area now covered by Dartmoor National Park in Devon, England to supply drinking water to the rapidly growing towns in the surrounding lowlands. With its deep valleys and high rainfall, Dartmoor was an inevitable location. New reservoirs continued construction even after the establishment of the National Park in 1951.
