The first Zero-Sludge, Zero-CSO, Zero-Odour Aero-Fac® WwTP for Northern Ireland. An Award Winning, Highly Sustainable Option for today’s requirements.

Gurney Environmental has received its first order from Northern Ireland Water to supply an Aero-Fac® Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for the town of Belleek in County Fermanagh. The Aero-Fac® STP has been chosen as part of the cross-border WEST (Water Enhancements through Sustainable Treatment) project and is supported by the PEACEPLUS programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). (More details at the project’s website: https://west-project.com/belleek/) The programme will see NI Water working in partnership with Uisce Éireann to improve water quality in Lough Erne, Lough Melvin and Donegal Bay.

Gurney Environmental are proud that our Aero-Fac® STP has been chosen as part of this important programme and look forward to working with NI Water over the coming months. A particular thank you to McAdam Design for their assistance throughout the design process.

This Aero-Fac® STP is sized for a future population of ~3,000 PE and is a fully biological facultative process using renewable energy wind-power as part of the energy mix, thereby minimising the amount of electricity required for the STP. Storm water/infiltration will be attenuated and treated on-site, and sludge will be digested on-site, thereby eliminating sludge handling and disposal from this community, whilst at the same time the required effluent with complete disinfection will be provided.

The first UK Aero-Fac® STP was built for the North of Scotland Water Authority and commissioned in 2001. That STP is still operational 25 years later and consistently meeting its consent requirements with no odour, sludge handling or disposal. The Aero-Fac® STP provides Water Utility companies with a lower CAPEX/OPEX/TOTEX/EMBODIED CARBON sewage treatment solution that is able to deal with real world conditions without the need for upstream CSOs or separated sewer systems.
