Client: South West Water
Date: April 24, 2023
Info: Water supply reservoirs

In 2019 South West Water joined other water companies by employing new options to improve water quality at their Wistlandpound Reservoir whilst reducing both CAPEX and OPEX. In 2023 the Meldon Reservoir order became the 2nd for South West Water. Both systems use the optional Gurney Environmental TYTAN® Algae Management System.

South West Water installed their first ResMix 3000 ‘Source Management' System at Wistlandpound Reservoir in 2019 and within 90 days of installation, they reported improvements to the reservoir including a reduction in algae.

In March of 2023, Gurney Environmental completed the installation for South West Water of a 2nd ResMix 3000 ‘Source Management’ System at their Meldon Reservoir, complete with the optional TYTAN® Algae Management System. The ResMix 3000 unit at Wistlandpound replaced a previous compressed air system for BGA control.

The newest installation at Meldon was the 2nd ResMix system installed for SWW, with both sites equipped with the optional TYTAN® Algae Management System. The ResMix 3000 units used at these reservoirs are able to reduce energy requirements by almost 90%!

Raw Water Pretreatment

Cost effective, simple to install and with very low energy consumption (<10% of a compressed air system), ResMix provides sustainable, year-round ‘Source Management’ for the first time. The optional TYTAN® Algae Management System attaches directly to the ResMix unit to provide an increased pro-active positive algae management that treats the water as it is constantly drawn into the area surrounding the ResMix unit with a 500m area of influence.

The largest available ResMix system, the ResMix 5000cc, consists of two counter rotating, surface-mounted, large axial flow mixers. These units can transfer 20 tonnes of oxygenated water from the surface to the bottom of a reservoir every second, not only eliminating thermal stratification but also increasing net dissolved oxygen levels throughout the water column. The ResMix 3000 used at the South West Water reservoirs is a smaller version of the 5000cc.

ULTRASONIC ALGAE MANAGEMENT

The TYTAN® Titanium Algae Management System as used at both Wistlandpound and Meldon reservoirs is a proven and well-documented broadband frequency device designed to transmit ultrasound directly through the water, with an exposed titanium face that cleans itself during operation. This design means that maintenance is minimal, which is important in situations where contact with water may be hazardous or where low maintenance requirements and costs are critical.

The TYTAN® system covers all frequencies to address a range of algal species and does so without requiring reprogramming for different algal species as some other systems do. TYTAN® incorporates a GSM card system which allows the owner to interrogate/confirm its operation as well as change certain settings remotely.

The TYTAN® System has a wide range of applications from open waters, irrigation lakes, canals, reservoirs, drinking water systems, sewage treatment lagoons, wetland polishing systems, and other applications.

On the 24th July 2019 Gurney Environmental completed the installation for South West Water of a ResMix 3000 ‘Source Management’ System for their Wistlandpound Reservoir. The ResMix 3000 replaced an existing compressed air system for BGA control and was the first ResMix system for SWW. Furthermore, the new Resmix 3000 is able to reduce energy requirements by almost 90%!

Savings For SWW

Chris Rockey, head of water quality for SWW, recently said:

“The ResMix is an innovative replacement of the system used previously and will provide better mixing more efficiently while using less energy due to its ingenious design.”

History of Meldon Reservoir

Meldon Reservoir is a reservoir in Devon, England owned by South West Water. Over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, several reservoirs and dams were built in the area now covered by Dartmoor National Park in Devon, England to supply drinking water to the rapidly growing towns in the surrounding lowlands. With its deep valleys and high rainfall, Dartmoor was an inevitable location. New reservoirs continued construction even after the establishment of the National Park in 1951.

What Our Clients Say

Aero-Fac® Wastewater Treatment System

"For 20 years the Aero-Fac@ system at Errol has met our consent discharge levels, had no odour issues and we have not required any sludge removal. Although it was not such a high consideration 20 years ago, Errol also supports Scottish Water’s moves to becoming carbon neutral."
